Are protein shakes healthy and do you need it?

Often associated with gym-goers, what does protein shake do to your body and do you really need it? Let’s find out.

What is a protein shake?

Protein is a molecule made from chemicals called amino acids and the human body needs amino acids to function at an optimum level. Amino acids help our body carry oxygen through the blood, strengthen our immune system and most important of all for many fitness enthusiasts; help us build muscle.

There are about 20 types of amino acids required by the human body but sadly we can only produce around 11 types and the remaining comes from food that we consume. That’s why a well balanced diet is crucial.

Protein shakes are one of the ways to ensure you hit your daily protein targets. They’re easy to make: you just need to mix the protein powder with water and you’re good to go, definitely easier than carrying a slice of steak wherever you go just so you can hit your daily protein needs.

However, you should always remember that a protein shake is a supplement, not real food. So, you still need to eat protein-based food.

  • Help lose fat especially in the belly area

Types of protein powder available in the market

There are few types of protein powder available in the market like,

Soy, Pea and Hemp:  These plant-based proteins are a great alternative for people who do not consume dairy.

Whey: Popular among athletes, this type of protein is a water-soluble milk protein that absorbs quickly and easily.

Casein: Rich in glutamine, an amino acid that speeds up muscle recovery after exercise, casein is suitable to take at night so that you can wake up fresh and energized.

Do you need to consume protein shakes?

It depends. If you are already consuming protein from real food then there’s no need for you to rely on protein powder and vice versa.

You should remember that there’s no way a protein shake can replace real food. Try to meet your daily protein intake with real food and if it’s not possible, then consider consuming a protein shake.
