How much water is enough for your body?

‘You should drink 8 glasses of water a day!’

We’re 100% sure you’ve heard or read this statement at least once in your life and we would like to confirm that it’s not true. There’s no science behind it!

Water is crucial for our body as it helps us to get rid of wastes through urination, bowel movements and perspiration. It also helps to keep your body temperature normal, lubricates joints and also protect sensitive tissues. Lack of water can lead to dehydration and your body can’t function properly. So, what factors influence our daily water needs?

Environment

Weather plays an important role in determining how much water you need. People who are living in a hot climate generally require more water and vice versa. However, be careful as dehydration can also occur to those who are living at higher altitudes or in colder climates.

Workout

If you have an active lifestyle, you definitely need to drink extra water prior, during and after a workout. You might need a sports drink if you’re doing an intense workout, however, find out here, if your body really needs a sports drink.

Special needs

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mom require more water to stay hydrated since water plays a major role in the healthy development of your baby. Water helps to form the placenta and breast milk is made up of about 90% of water. Drinking enough water can help you to maintain your breast milk supply.

You do need to drink a lot of water on a daily basis, but be sure not to overdo it as it can also lead to health issues. Stop believing that there is a formal recommendation of 8 glasses of water a day or 2 litres a day, simply pay attention to your body. Drink adequately!
