How long should you wait to smoke after a workout?
We’re sure you’ve seen many people light up a cigarette as soon as they finish an intense workout at a gym or pitch, right? Before we discuss how long one should wait to light up a cigarette after a workout, let’s revisit the negative effects of smoking.
1.You are going to be out of breath
After a workout session, your body requires as much oxygen as possible to recover that’s why your heart rate goes up and your breathing quickens, however, the minute you inhale cigarette smoke, it triggers swelling of the mucus membranes, restricting oxygen capacity.
2. Your heart is going to be overworked
Your heart needs oxygen to function at its optimum level and smoking cigarette supplies the body with harmful carbon dioxide instead of much-needed oxygen. Your heart will have to work twice as hard in order to supply the body with oxygen.
3. Your brain suffers the most…
Smoking causes your body to absorb a lot of carbon monoxide and this will affect your brain function. High carbon monoxide levels can distort time perception, impair the visual performance, disrupt motor skills and even delay cognitive reasoning.
4.You’ll feel tired most of the time
One of the reasons we work out is to feel energetic however when you smoke cigarettes, you’ll find it harder to keep up with your workout routine over time as smoking can suppress oxygen levels.
So, to answer how long you should wait to smoke after a workout is its best to wait till you get home, shower and have a proper meal. If you still insist to smoke right after a workout then we suggest you have top medical teams on standby as you are at risk of a heart attack!
