Fashanu was an English footballer who played for multiple clubs between 1978 and 1997. In 1990, he came out as being gay and he was abused by fans everywhere he played and had to constantly move clubs every six months. In 1998, he commited suicide after he was accused of raping a seventeen-year-old-boy. In his suicide note, he wrote that the sex was consensual.
2. Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris
Fresh off winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Krieger and fiancée Ashlyn Harris announced their engagement in March 2019. Their relationship had been speculated for years and in a recent interview, they admitted to being blown away by everyone’s positive reaction to their engagement news.
3. Thomas Hitzlsperger
Hitzlsperger is the head of sport at VfB Stuttgart and a former footballer. He retired from football following a series of injuries and also came out as gay. In 2007, Hitzlsperger ended his relationship with his long-time girlfriend, Inga just one month before they were due to get married. He said that he had only realized that he was gay in the past few years.
4. Liam Davis
Liam Davis is England’s only openly gay footballer. Being part of UEFA’s #EqualGame campaign promoting that the game is open to all despite one’s ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation and religious beliefs. Davis urges all not to fear to reveal their sexuality.
5. Emma Kete and Jodie Taylor
In the recent Women’s World Cup, Kete and Taylor were united at the tournament in France. When Kete discovered Taylor would be playing for England, she took to Instagram to write: “Same dream, different team. I get to play at a World Cup with my wife.” The couple have play alongside each other at club level.
