1.Water

Nothing is better than water. It might not taste as good as a sports drink but it provides your body with everything you need. Athletes need extra hydration because let’s face it, working out is their job, they are constantly doing physical activities so their recovery needs are different compared to ours.

2.Nuts and seeds

Not only are they delicious, but they are also good for your health. Nuts and seeds contain magnesium, which can be found in sports drinks. Magnesium does wonders to your immune system, brain function and bone strength. Lack of magnesium can lead to an adverse effect on exercise.

3. Salt

It’s a known fact that sodium supports hydration. Athletes who sweat a lot need to level up their sodium intake. Nancy Clark, RD, a sports nutritionist and author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook shared that runners normally would nosh on bouillon cubes during their events, this trick, however, is not safe for the rest of us to try.

4.Bananas

One of the ingredients in sports drink is potassium which can also be found in bananas. Potassium helps to maintain hydration levels which is lost through bodily functions like sweating, urinating and pooping. Not just that, potassium can also reduce muscle soreness and be a great energy booster!

5.Raisins

Raisins are a perfect swap for carbohydrates. Studies have been conducted on athletes regarding this matter and it is proven that raisins are as good as sports drinks. For extra benefits, as weird as this may sound, make sure to add a pinch of salt to your raisins before going on a marathon or long runs.
