Zaha: United tried to destroy my career

Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha admits that his time with Manchester United was a trialing period in his life as a footballer.

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Mail, the 26-year-old shared that signing for the Red Devils was the “opportunity of a lifetime” for him and he did everything in his power to succeed at the club.

However, then United manager, David Moyes, and his staff had other plans.

“When he took me out of the Champions League squad and put in Adnan Januzaj, who had never played for the first team, I knew then that this is way bigger than I ever thought and had gone way beyond footballing reasons.

“When it was not about football or ability, what could I do?”

Moyes had made it clear that Zaha was not his “type of player” and the Ivory Coast national felt further let down by the club’s failure to shut down false rumours he was sleeping with Moyes’ daughter and that his absence was due to an attitude problem.

Known for his excellent ball control and footwork, Zaha has attempted 730 dribbles in the past three seasons – 130 more than any other player.
