Why are Japan & Qatar at the Copa America?

Japan have been drawn in Group C of the Copa America 2019 alongside the likes of Uruguay, Chile and Ecuador, while Qatar are in Group B with Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay.

As most of you SHOULD know, Japan and Qatar are both situated in Asia. So why are they featuring in a competition that’s held for South American nations?

This is because the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) only has ten members, and additional invitees are required to organise a proper tournament.

While it’s generally teams from North America that are invited, but due to their participation in the Concacaf Gold Cup this summer, they would have only been able to send reserve squads to the Copa America.

Which is why the CONMEBOL opted to invite Japan and Qatar instead for this year’s edition of the tournament.

However, this is not the first time that Japan have participated in the Copa America. They were also present at the 1999 tournament in Paraguay.
