Vietnam edge Malaysia
Malaysia suffered a second consecutive defeat in their World Cup 2022/Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers campaign by losing 1-0 to Vietnam in Thursday’s Group G match in Hanoi.
Nguyen Quang Hai scored his side’s winning goal by converting Que Ngoc Hai’s spectacular long pass in the 39th minute to help Vietnam secure its first win of the campaign.
The result saw Malaysia slipping to fourth place in the standings while Vietnam moved up to second, where they are tied with Group G leader, Thailand, on four points.
Malaysia assistant coach S. Balachandran, who stepped in for head coach Tan Cheng Hoe at the post-match conference, praised the Harimau Malaya for putting up a solid performance and believes that they can still progress to the next round.
“We played against a strong team and we played very well. We had chances in the first half but couldn’t make it count. After three games, qualifying chances are still open for all the teams in the group, including us,” he said.
