Vietnam are champions of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018!
Vietnam defeated Malaysia 1-0 (aggregate 3-2) at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi to lift the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 trophy.
A solitary goal from Nguyen Anh Duch in the sixth minute ensured that Vietnam would be crowned as champions of this year’s edition of the tournament.
Malaysia and Vietnam played out a 2-2 draw at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium last Tuesday and the odds were very much in the favour of the Golden Dragons heading into the second leg.
A total of 10 players – six Vietnamese and four Malaysians – were booked in the tightly contested encounter, which culminated in the dismissal of Shahrul Saad who was shown a second yellow card in the 95th minute.
Following the match, Malaysia coach Tan Cheng Hoe said: “We lost because of individual mistakes that allowed Vietnam to score a goal.
“However, I am happy with the team’s performance throughout the tournament. It has been an amazing journey for the team as many did not expect us to go far.
“The players did their best but it wasn’t enough to win the AFF Cup.”
