Van Dijk wins FSA player of the year award

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been named the Football Supporters’ Association player of the year.

Van Dijk beat out Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling for the award after more than 340,000 votes were cast by fans.

Other nominees include, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

This is the fourth time in the last seven years that a Liverpool player has won the award, with the previous ones being Mo Salah, Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez.

“I’m very grateful to get this trophy. It means a lot to me,” said the 28-year-old in a video message.

“Thank you to everyone for voting me player of the year, all of the fans around the country.

“Hopefully I can keep doing what I’m doing; getting better and helping the team and the club.”

The Holland international was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, UEFA Men’s Player of the Year and even finished second to Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or.
