Tough test for Malaysia

Malaysia are set to face host nation Cambodia tonight in their first game of the 2019 AFF U-22 Youth Championship.

Despite the absence of notable young talents such as Akhyar Rashid, Safawi Rasid, Syahmi Safari and Daniel Amier Norhisham, head coach Ong Kim Swee should be able to rest easy knowing that the four players brought in to replace them are talented in their own right.

The players are; Nik Akif Syahiran, R.Kogileswaran Nik Azli Nik Alias and Hadi Fayyadh Abdul Razak, who is currently shining for Fagiano Okayama in Japan’s J3 League.

Speaking ahead of Malaysia’s opener, Kim Swee said, “There are no favourites in this group. All the teams are capable of performing, and as you all know, youth football development in this region have improved tremendously.

“We will be facing Cambodia in the first match and it won’t be easy. Cambodia, in recent months, have seen changes in coaching and football personalities have also graced the country.

“We will be playing in front of their home crowd and it will be an interesting game for our boys.”
