Thais face tough competition in AFF Cup
President of the Football Association of Thailand, Somyot Poompanmoung, has said that the level of competition in this year’s edition of the AFF Suzuki Cup is significantly higher than previous years.
The War Elephants kicked off their AFF Suzuki Cup campaign in stunning fashion by defeating Timor-Leste 7-0.
But despite their convincing performance, Thai Football Chief, Somyot Poompanmoung, has warned there are a number of countries that they should look out for this year.
“We always want to win and we will always do our best but we know that standards in the region are improving.
“We can see that Malaysia and Singapore are developing and these countries have a lot of history in the region. The Philippines have improved and they have also hired a famous coach in Sven-Goran Eriksson. All of these teams have ambition.
“They are all our rivals and we are honoured that they are our rivals,” he said in an interview with ESPN.
Thailand won the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2014 and 2016.
