Spain made to wait
Norway clinched a dramatic 1-1 draw with Spain thanks to Joshua King’s 94th-minute penalty in Oslo as the three-time champions were made to wait to qualify for Euro 2020.
Victory would have secured Spain a spot at next year’s tournament, which is set to take place across Europe, if Romania had failed to beat the Faroe Islands or Malta had overcome Sweden.
But Romania eased past the Faroe Islands 3-0 and Sweden made easy work of Malta with a 4-0 thumping. This means that Spain will now need to defeat Sweden in Solna on Tuesday to be sure of qualification with two games to spare.
Robert Moreno’s Spain are ahead of Sweden by five points in Group F with three matches remaining, while Romania trail by only one point.
Following the draw in Oslo, Spanish captain Sergio Ramos, who surpassed Iker Casillas’ national appearance record with his 168th cap, said, “It’s a real pain to lose points in the final seconds. It’s complicated to play against a team who knew that if they lost they were pretty much out.
“We viewed this as an important match to win so as to qualify tonight but we approach the remaining games with calm and confidence.”
The result also ended Spain’s 100 percent record in the group and it was their first draw in a European Championship qualifier since the 1-1 stalemate against Iceland in September 2007.
