Real Madrid sack Lopetegui

La Liga giants Real Madrid have sacked manager Julen Lopetegui following the club’s poor start to the season.

B-team coach Santiago Solari is set to be temporarily in charge while Real Madrid look for a worthy replacement. Club president Florentino Perez had been interested to hire former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte but his demands for a two-and-half-year contract and for a team of up to five assistants could prove to be a stumbling block.

Reports in Spain now claim that current Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is a hot favourite for the vacant role. But sources close to the club also state that they might leave Solari in charge of the first team until next month’s international break before appointing a new manager.

Lopetegui lasted just 14 games with the club, winning only six matches. Real Madrid are currently 9th in La Liga following their humiliating 5-1 defeat to rivals Barcelona last weekend.
