Qatar stun Japan to lift Asian Cup
Favourites Japan were defeated 3-1 by an impressive Qatar side in the final of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup at the Zayed Sports City Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
Goals from Almoez Ali (12′), Abdulaziz Hatem (27′) and Akram Afif (83′) helped Qatar claim their first ever Asian Cup and major footballing trophy to date. Four-time Asian Cup winners, Japan bagged a consolation goal in the 69th minute through Takumi Minamino.
22-year-old Almoez emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals in seven matches and in doing so, became the all-time record goalscorer for Qatar at the Asian Cup, breaking Mansour Muftah’s previous record of five goals.
Almoez’s outstanding haul in the 2019 edition also means that he currently holds the record for the most number of goals scored in a single Asian Cup tournament.
Following their impressive victory over Japan, Felix Sanchez’s phenomenal young side will be hoping to maintain that momentum ahead of their participation in the 2019 Copa América in Brazil.
