AFF Suzuki Cup 2018

Mat Yo at the double as Malaysia see off Laos

Malaysia defeated Laos 3-1 in their second group match of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on Monday thanks to two late goals from Norshahrul Idlan Talaha.

Despite being touted as the heavy favourites in the match, Malaysia found themselves trailing after just seven minutes when Phithack Kongmathilath fired home an unstoppable freekick past national goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

But the Harimau Malaya were able to find a way back into the game through Mohd Zaquan Adha who converted Muhammad Syahmi Safari’s excellent cross from the right flank in the 15th minute.

The second half saw Malaysia make three attacking substitutions.

And the bold move to have five forwards on the pitch bore fruit in the 86th minute when Norshahrul was able to break the deadlock with a poacher’s finish.

Norshahrul then went on to bag his third goal of the tournament with a well taken header in the 92nd minute.

In the other match, Myanmar defeated Cambodia 4-1 at the Mandalarthiri Stadium thanks to goals from Hlaing Bo Bo (60th & 93rd), Than Htet Aung (70th) and Sithu Aung (80th).

Malaysia currently lead Group A of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 with two wins out of two and are set to face Vietnam at the Mỹ Đình National Stadium in Hanoi this Friday.
