Malaysia thump Timor-Leste

Tan Cheng Hoe’s Harimau Malaya squad got their 2022 World Cup qualification campaign off to a flying start with a commanding 7-1 win over Timor-Leste in the first leg playoff at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.

Malaysia ran riot in the opening 45 minutes as they scored four goals through La’Vere Corbin Ong (11th), Shahrel Fikri Md Fauzi (21st), Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (42nd) and Safawi Rasid (45th).

In the second half, Joao Pedro pulled one back for Timor-Leste after breaking away from centrebacks Shahrul Saad and Adam Nor Azlin to score past Farizal Marlias in the 51st minute.

Faiz Nasir, who was brought in to replace Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, scored a sensational volley in the 77th minute to give Malaysia a 6-1 lead, following some excellent work from Davies in the middle of the pitch.

Akhyar Rashid completed a perfect performance for the hosts when he capitalised on an abysmal clearance and placed the ball past Timor Leste goalkeeper Fernandes Aderito, who had a day to forget.

Malaysia are set to face Timor-Leste in the second leg on 11 June at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
