Malaysia make it to the FINAL!

The Harimau Malaya played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Thailand in Bangkok to progress to the final of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018.

With the score tied at 0-0 in the first leg at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, the odds were very much against Malaysia to secure their fourth-ever AFF Suzuki Cup final appearance.

Bolstered by their passionate home supporters, the Thais took the lead in the 20th minute when Thitipan Puangchan’s header was accidentally knocked into the Malaysian goal by Irfan Zakaria, who had just come on as a substitute.

But Malaysia bounced back in stunning fashion seven minutes later through an incredible top corner finish by Syahmi Safari.

Thailand came out all guns blazing in the second half and once again found themselves in front courtesy of a headed goal by Pansa Hemviboon in the 63rd minute.

And in the 71st minute, Syamer Kutty Abba received the ball from a throw-in and whipped in an inviting cross into the path of Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, who turned quickly and fired an unstoppable strike past Thai goalkeeper Budprom Chatchai.

There was more drama late on in the game as Malaysia’s Syahmi gave away a penalty in the 94th minute. The player was sent off for a second bookable offence and Thailand looked set to book their final ticket.

Fortunately for Malaysia, the tournament’s current top scorer, Adisak Kraisorn, skied his penalty.

Malaysia will now either face Vietnam or Philippines in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 Final.
