Malaysia maintain perfect start
Ong Kim Swee’s Malaysia squad followed up their victory over Philippines with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Laos in the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship Qualifiers at the Shah Alam Stadium on Sunday.
The victory sees the Under-23 side maintain their perfect start in the qualifiers of the championship which is set to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, January 2020.
Laos put up a tough fight after being thrashed 5-0 by China in their opening match and made the Harimau Muda squad work for the result.
Following a less than convincing first 45 minutes, Safawi Rasid was brought on in the second half to help give Malaysia an attacking edge in front of their home supporters.
And Kim Swee’s faith in the talented player was rightly rewarded in the 81st minute when Safawi’s free kick was misjudged by Laos goalkeeper Xaysavath and floated straight into goal to give Malaysia the lead.
Malaysia will now need to beat China on Tuesday to have any chance of reaching the AFC U23 Championship finals in Bangkok next year.
