Malaysia beaten by hosts Philippines
Datuk Ong Kim Swee’s Malaysia Under 22 (U-22) side continued their winless run at the SEA Games 2019 with a 1-0 defeat to host nation Philippines in Manila on Friday.
The Harimau Muda kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Myanmar and followed that with a poor display against the Young Azkals at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
In a repeat of what happened in the SEA Games final two years ago against Thailand, goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli once again failed to judge a corner kick properly and Stephan Shrock’s set piece was easily converted by Amani Manuel Aguinaldo in the 73rd minute to give the home side the winning goal.
The defeat now leaves Malaysia fourth in Group A, behind Myanmar, Cambodia and Philippines; with progression to the semifinals seeming unlikely.
They will next face bottom side Timor-Leste on Monday, 2 December.
