Mabkhout stuns Malaysia
United Arab Emirates (UAE) striker Ali Ahmed Mabkhout scored two goals to help his side overcome Malaysia 2-1 in their Group G World Cup 2022/Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers clash at the National Stadium on Tuesday.
The Harimau Malaya took an early lead through Syafiq Ahmad who headed in a beautiful cross from Matthew Davies in the first minute.
Despite creating a whole slew of chances after the opener, Malaysia’s advantage was erased by a well-taken headed goal from Mabkhout right before the stroke of half time.
And the 28-year-old stepped up to grab the winner for UAE in the 75th minute after brilliantly losing Malaysia defenders Shahrul Saad and Adam Nor Azlin.
Thailand currently lead Group G with four points following their 3-0 victory over Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, while UAE and Malaysia are in second and third, respectively.
