Lovren rescues point for Liverpool
Liverpool will at least need a draw in their final UEFA Champions League group game at Red Bull Salzburg to seal progression to the last 16 after being held 1-1 by Napoli.
The Reds found themselves trailing 1-0 in the 21st minute as Napoli’s Dries Mertens beat the offside trap to finish from a tight angle.
The defending champions were far from their usual best in the opening stages as they struggled to move the ball around smoothly but did come close to equalising on the stroke of half-time through James Milner who was denied at the near post.
And it was defender Dejan Lovren who put the hosts back on level terms with a headed goal in the 65th minute. But despite the late onslaught by Liverpool, Napoli held firm to earn a valuable point.
The draw at Anfield means that the Reds will have to go to Red Bull Salzburg in two weeks time needing a draw or hope that Napoli lose at home to Genk.
