Liverpool see off Sheffield
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane helped Liverpool defeat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield while also maintaining their 13-point advantage at the top of the league table.
Salah opened the scoring in the fourth minute, capitalising on a slip from Sheffield defender George Baldock. And in the 64th minute Mane doubled their lead with a simple tap in after his original effort had been parried to secure a victory that marked Liverpool being unbeaten in the league for one whole year.
Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League leaders have now accumulated 58 points from 20 games, while Sheffield United are in eighth, just seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Such was Liverpool’s performance that even Sheffield boss Chris Wilder was full of praise for them following his side’s defeat this morning.
“It was very unlike us, we did not lay a glove on them and didn’t do anything that’s got us into this position,” said Wilder in a post-match interview.
“They were outstanding, and did not really get out of second or third gear. They did all those things. People talk about academy coaches and all this nonsense, technical, tactical stuff. When we played them at our place, we laid a glove on them and made it difficult for them.
“They won every first ball, every second ball, ran forwards and backwards, they did that miles better than us.
“So academy coaches and all this nonsense that comes out about coaching, have a little peek at Liverpool tonight. Played in second and third gear but still had the humility and the desire to do that as world champions and European champions and well on their way to being Premier League champions.”
