Liverpool face Carabao Cup expulsion
Liverpool are under investigation by the English Football League (EFL) to find out if the Premier League club fielded an ineligible player in its third-round League Cup victory over MK Dons last week.
If found guilty, the Reds could possibly face expulsion from the tournament. Reports claim that the player who has been called into question is 22-year-old Pedro Chirivella, who made his first appearance for Liverpool since May 2016, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish second division club Extremadura.
It is believed that Liverpool failed to obtain a new international clearance for Chirivella when he returned from Spain in the summer and it is unclear if the necessary paperwork was in place.
“The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players,” a Liverpool spokesman said.
“We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”
Liverpool defeated League One side MK Dons 2-0 to set up a mouthwatering fourth round clash with Arsenal.
