Liverpool, Barcelona progress

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool secured a memorable 3-1 victory against Bundeliga giants Bayern Munich while Barcelona thrashed Lyon 5-1 to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Two goals from Sadio Mane and a header from Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk at the Allianz Arena helped last season’s finalists, Liverpool, through with a 3-1 aggregate last-16 win.

Mane’s two goals against Bayern means he has now scored seven away goals in the Champions League for the Reds, more than any other player in the club’s history.

Meanwhile at the Nou Camp, instrumental forward Lionel Messi scored twice and set up two other goals as Barcelona booked a last-eight place for the 12th successive season.

The result gave Ernesto Valverde’s side a 5-1 victory on aggregate following last month’s goalless draw in the first leg in France, leaving Barcelona as the only Spanish team in the quarter-finals.
