Indonesian league to go on despite AFF Cup

The Indonesia Liga 1, the country’s top tier football league, will be not be taking a back seat despite Tim Garuda’s involvement in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018.

The move by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), which understandably has angered a large number of Indonesian footy fans, will see the national side compete in the tournament on the same day as Liga 1 matches.

For instance, on the day of Indonesia’s AFF Suzuki Cup upcoming group match against Asian powerhouse Thailand, there will be a total of three Liga 1 matches held – Perseru Serui vs Borneo, Barito Putera vs Mitra Kukar & PS TIRA vs Sriwijaya.

This leaves the Liga 1 clubs without some of their best players while forcing a great number of fans to choose between their clubs and the national team.

Indonesia are set to face Thailand in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 at the Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok on 17 November.
