Guardiola hails “incredible” Sterling
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that forward Raheem Sterling is “incredible” and criticised the lack of protection for players of foreign descent.
The manager’s comments are in response to what took place during the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Chelsea, where Sterling was seen to be racially abused by a Blues fan.
“Racism is everywhere, not just in football. How we treat immigrants and refugees, when once in our lives our grand-parents were refugees. How we treat them in society, it’s everywhere. That’s why we have to fight every day,” he said.
Guardiola also added that there should be more protection for players who are at risk of suffering racial discrimination in the game.
“He’s (Sterling) an incredible person, incredible human being. It’s tough to understand today what happened to black people in all history. You have to protect them, we are equal. It’s tough in the 21st century to still be in this position. We have to be better,” said the 47-year-old manager.
