Griezmann bags double on home debut

Antoine Griezmann scored two goals to help Barcelona return to winning ways in their resounding 5-2 La Liga victory over Real Betis on Monday.

Goals from Carles Perez (56′), Jordi Alba (60′) and Arturo Vidal (77′) completed a memorable day for the Spanish giants as they marked defender Gerard Pique’s 500th appearance for the club.

Griezmann, who joined from rivals Atletico Madrid, got on the scoresheet four minutes before halftime and bagged a second in the 50th minute.

And coach Ernesto Valverde was full of praise for the 28-year-old French World Cup winner: “I have to admit it was a really important day for him given the absentees we had.

“He responded brilliantly. He dropped deep to help the midfield, but also pushed on and can lose his man brilliantly.

“For us, it’s fundamental to have players who can clock up goals and the fact Griezmann debuted at the Camp Nou and scored is great news.

Barcelona have three points from two La Liga games, following their opening day defeat to Athletic Bilbao, while Real Betis have lost both of them games this season.
