France chief: It’s over for him

French football federation president, Noel Le Graet, believes it is unlikely that Karim Benzema will ever represent the French national squad again.

In a recent interview with French newspaper Ouest-France, Le Graet said, “I believe that it’s over for him with Les Bleus, especially since he may have been less fit for some time.”

This despite the Real Madrid striker being named in the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award for the best player of the year.

France coach Didier Deschamps has not called up Benzema since he claimed that the national team coach bowed to the pressure of a racist few when agreeing to leave him out of squad for the 2016 Euros.

The player’s suspected involvement in an extortion scam over a sex tape featuring France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena has also complicated matters further.

“It’s been three or four years that the case has been dragging. A ruling should have been issued much earlier. It made things hard for us,” Le Graet said.

Benzema made 81 appearances and scored 27 goals for France.
