Five goal thriller at Trafford

Manchester United secured a last gasp 3-2 win over Southampton at Old Trafford to go fourth in the English Premier League.

The Red Devils found themselves trailing in front of their home supporters to a Yan Valery strike in the 26th minute and having gone 2-1 up through Andreas Pereira (53’) and Romelu Lukaku (59’), they were pegged back once again by James Ward-Prowse’s sublime 75th minute free-kick.

However, Lukaku, who appears to have rediscovered his goal-scoring form, struck another outstanding goal in the 88th minute to secure three points that lifted them back into the top four of the Premier League at the expense of Arsenal, following the 1-1 draw with fierce rivals Tottenham at the Wembley Stadium.

On the back of that thrilling victory, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, said, “The manner of it is like the old days. I have been part of it so many times myself. I’m so pleased for the boys – they managed to claw three points out of this game.

“You forget you are tired. You just run and you want that ball delivered around the box. We have done it so many times. As a manager, that is not the way you want to enjoy the first 90 minutes. You want to be comfortable.

“We should have been two up in the first five minutes. [There were] some great saves by the kid. Those two strikes for them – absolute quality.

“We spoke at half-time: get more urgency, get the ball in the box, and the strength of them [the fans] will suck the ball in. I don’t want to take too much from Andreas and Romelu as they were great finishes, but that is part of the history.”
