Canizares: Reyes does not deserve tribute

Former Real Madrid and Spain star Santiago Canizares has said that Jose Antonio Reyes does not deserve a hero’s tribute.

Reyes, who formerly played as a forward for Sevilla, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, tragically died in a car crash on Saturday just outside Seville.

However, following the devastating news, Canizares, Reyes’ former Spain team-mate and ex-Valencia goalkeeper, has sought to criticise the 35-year-old for his high-speed driving that caused harm not only to himself but also his fellow passengers.

Canizares tweeted: “Driving at high speed shows a reprehensible attitude. In the accident there have been victims in addition to the driver.

“Reyes does not deserve a tribute like a hero.

“But that does not mean that I regret what happened and that I pray for their souls.”

The former Seville player’s coffin was due to be taken to his boyhood football club on Sunday before being moved to Utrera Town Hall.
