Atletico, City draw first blood

Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are one step closer to the next round of the UEFA Champions League after recording victories over Juventus and Schalke 04, respectively, in their Round of 16 First Leg ties this morning.

Defenders Jose Maria Gimenez (78′) and Diego Godin (83′) both netted after Alvaro Morata’s header had been controversially ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR), to earn Atletico a crucial 2-0 win over Italian giants Juventus at the Wanda Metrapolitano.

Meanwhile at the VELTINS-Arena, Manchester City sealed a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Schalke despite being reduced to 10 men and conceding two penalties.

Sergio Aguero (18′) had put the away side in front but a controversial penalty, awarded by VAR, and another just eight minutes later helped Nabil Bentaleb (38′ & 45′) to give Schalke a 2-1 lead.

But Leroy Sane, who came on as a substitute, struck a brilliant free-kick in the 85th minute, before Raheem Sterling slotted home in the final minute of regular time to secure an incredible comeback for City.
