Arsenal secure comeback victory

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a late goal to help the Gunners secure a 3-1 win over Valencia and give his side a crucial advantage for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Mouctar Diakhaby struck an early header (11′) to give Valencia the lead and a precious away goal but Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette bagged a double (18′ & 25′) before halftime, putting Arsenal back in the driving seat.

At 2-1 and with the game fast approaching its end, the semi-final was still very much in the balance for the second leg at the Mestalla next week but Aubameyang’s late volley means Arsenal will head to Spain as favourites to reach the final.

“It’s a good result, but the second leg is going to be very difficult and maybe different. I consider it 50-50 in this one. They are going to feel strong with their supporters there,” Arsenal boss Unai Emery told reporters.

Arsenal have progressed from 37 of their 40 ties in all European competition when winning the first leg.
