Ajax upset Juventus

Juventus were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League following a shocking 2-1 (Agg: 3-2) defeat to Ajax in the quarter-final second leg at the Allianz Stadium this morning.

Ajax’s 19-year-old captain Matthijs de Ligt headed home the winner from a corner in the 67th minute to help the Dutch side come from behind to clinch a 3-2 aggregate win and reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1996/97.

Cristiano Ronaldo put Juventus ahead with a powerful header in the 28th minute but Donny van de Beek levelled six minutes later, much to the delight of their travelling supporters.

Following the impressive victory, De Ligt said,”Can we can go on to win the competition? Well, we are in the semi-finals now. And we have eliminated two of the favourites in the last two rounds. The next games will be very difficult, but so were these ones. So who knows?”

Ajax are now set to face either Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur in the final four of the UEFA Champions League.
