Ajax hold Juve, Barca edge United
Ajax were able to hold Serie A giants Juventus to a 1-1 draw while Barcelona edged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals this morning.
Cristiano Ronaldo, on his return from a thigh injury, gave Juventus the lead at the Johan Cruyff Arena with a powerful header in the 45th minute to take his record goal tally in the competition to 125.
But Ajax hit back with a stunner of their own as soon as play resumed (46′), thanks to 22-year-old Brazilian winger David Neres.
The result means that the Dutch side now have a tricky battle on their hands for the return leg in Turin next week.
Meanwhile at Old Trafford, Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona side secured a crucial first-leg win courtesy of an own goal by Red Devils defender Luke Shaw who deflected in Luis Suarez’s header in the 12th minute.
Manchester United failed to a register a single shot on target throughout the match and will have a mountain to climb when they travel to the Nou Camp next week.
