5 footballers who died while playing

Here are some of the players who died on the pitch.

1.Stefan Petrovski

Australian goalkeeper, Stefan Petrovski who played for Melaka United was hit by lighting while training with his team. The 18-year-old goalkeeper lost consciousness immediately after being hit and passed away less than a month later. He died of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy; brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen during cardiac arrest.

2.Marc-Vivien Foe

Foe is a Cameroon midfielder playing for his country at Grance’s Stade de Gerland against Colombia when he suddenly collapsed in the center circle after 72 minutes. The medical team spent 45 minutes trying to save the 28-year-old’s life but he died as soon as they got to the Gerland’s medical center.

3.Patrick Ekeng

Another player from Cameroon, Ekeng had told his teammate that he didn’t want to play in a match against Viitorul Constanța but did it anyway. 7 minutes after his entrance in the second-half of the game, he collapsed. He was brought to the hospital shortly after and within two hours, the medical staff confirmed his death. It was suspected that he had a heart attack however the Romanian interior ministry found that the ambulance which transported the 26-year-old footballer had faulty equipment and expired medicine.

4.Cristiano Jr.

Cristiano Jr. was a Brazilian footballer who played for Dempo; a football club based in Panjim, Goa. As soon as he scored the opening goal during the final of the Federation Cup at Bangalore’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium, he collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival. His death was caused by cardiac arrest.

5. Antonio Puerta

Puerta died three days after collapsing during a Primera Liga match in Madrid. He collapsed after jogging back towards his own goal. He managed to get back up, walk off the pitch but collapsed again in the changing room.
