5 biggest flops in Premier League history
Not all big money transfers work out. Find out which players are the biggest flops in Premier League history.
1.Andriy Shevchenko: AC Milan to Chelsea
Now a politician and football manager, Shevchenko was a pretty decent footballer during his time. He is the all-time top scorer for the Ukrainian national team with 48 goals. In 2006, Shevchenko moved to Chelsea with a fee of RM 150 million and football fans were very excited about his arrival. However, his performance dipped and he only managed to score 22 goals at Chelsea.
2.Juan Sebastian Veron: Lazio to Manchester United
In 2001, Veron moved to Manchester United from Lazio with a fee of RM 140 million on a five-year contract. In an interview, Veron said, “I’m confident with my skills and I have no fear of the premiership”. His first season at Old Trafford went very well, he was even awarded the Premier League Player of the Month award. However, from there on things went south and he claimed that he had trouble adapting to the fast pace of the premiership.
3.Ali Dia: Dijon to Southampton
Probably the most bizarre transfer of all time. In 1996, Graeme Souness, then Southampton manager, received a phone call from a person claiming to be George Weah, former FIFA World Player of the Year. ‘Weah’ told Souness that Dia was his cousin and a great player. In reality, none of this was true, ‘Weah’ was actually a friend of Dia from university. Souness agreed and signed Dia on a one month-contract. His performance was so bad that he was dragged off the pitch half an hour into a game.
4.Massimo Taibi: Venezia to Manchester United
Taibi’s story at Manchester United is short. He only managed to last four games. The end.
5.Marco Boogers: Sparta Rotterdam to West Ham United
In July 1995, Boogers joined West Ham United from Sparta Rotterdam for RM 5 million. In a match against Manchester United, he was sent off for a violent rib-high challenge on Gary Neville and received a red card. He was also injured badly while he was with the team and never played again.
