Japan win AFC Beach Soccer Championship

Takaaki Oba scored the winner as Japan defeated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 3-1 on penalties to become 2019 Asian Football Confederation Beach Soccer Champions.

The penultimate match in Pattaya, Thailand had initially ended 2-2 in regulation time.

Japan were 2-0 up inside the first 16 minutes, Masayuki Komaki opening the scoring before a phenomenal long-range volley from Ozu Moreira, who bagged his ninth goal of the tournament.

But the UAE were right back in it six minutes later, with Waleed Beshr superbly picking out Mohammad, who coolly slotted home.

Mohammad stepped up for his team once again shortly after, benefiting from a goalmouth scramble after goalkeeper Humaid Jamal had found the crossbar from the other end of the pitch.

Despite losing the final for the second Championship in a row, the UAE will represent Asia at the upcoming FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Paraguay alongside winners Japan, having made it to the final in Pattaya.
